SiRF Unveils Next Generation GPS

SiRF, the San Jose-based embedded GPS company, has unveiled SiRFstar IV, a vast upgrade to the GPS architecture used in many portable and in-car GPS systems released over the past five years.
The new architecture aims to reduce battery drain, and it allows for much smaller receiver components. Intriguingly, SiRF designed SiRFstar IV not to just coexist with other components in cell phones and other consumer electronics, but take advantage of the additional sensors included in those devices as well.

Powerful new radio technologies that hold the key to blisteringly fast wireless communications, in-car radar to improve road safety and more detailed medical imaging, among other uses, have been given a boost by cutting-edge research carried out in Europe on miniscule microchips.
The work, led by Belgian-based nanotechnology research group IMEC, has proven the potential for 45 nanometre-scale chips to be used for radio frequency (RF) applications that require high speed and low power consumption.
