FCC: Google WiFi intercepts are ‘worrisome’

Google’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) collection of personal information transmitted over WiFi networks is “worrisome,” said a Federal Communications Commission official in the agency’s first public response to the search engine’s May acknowledgment that it intercepted wireless Internet communications.
Joel Gurin, chief of the FCC consumer and governmental affairs bureau, wrote on the commission’s official blog June 11 that the incident raises “important concerns,” but stopped short of chastising Google. Rather, he suggested that consumers read an FCC guide to securing wireless networks.
“Whether intentional or not, collecting information sent over WiFi networks clearly infringes on consumer privacy,” he wrote.

The Bill, which is likely to be rushed through parliament in the wash-up process that takes place between an election being called and parliament being dissolved, places the onus on network owners to make sure that their networks are not used for illegal activity.
