Boris’ Wi-Fi plans have no substance

June 30, 2010 by moto · Leave a Comment

When Boris Johnson took to the stage at the Google Zeitgeist event in May he told the assembled media that London would become the technology capital of the world with Wi-Fi hotspots on “every lamp post and every bus stop”.

Johnson also talked about mass Wi-Fi coverage at the recent State of London debate, and even mentioned plans to get Wi-Fi access on the tube network.

iPad UK launch

April 6, 2010 by moto · Leave a Comment

iPad went on sale in the US on Saturday, and according to Apple more than 300,000 were sold. So what about us Brits? We had to follow the iPad launch-day jamboree from afar, going green with envy as we read the status updates and tweets from friends on the other side of the Atlantic.

So what’s the story with iPad and the UK? When will we be able to buy it here, how much will it cost, and will we get the full range of apps? A warning: most of this is speculation for the moment, but it’s informed speculation at least.

Nokia Wins Patent Case In UK

January 18, 2010 by moto · Leave a Comment

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia Corp. (NOK) has won a patent case in a U.K. court against German patent licensing firm IPCom, press spokesman Mark Durrant said Monday.

The case follows on a long-running dispute under which IPCom has tried to charge Nokia for using the patents, but the U.K. court ruling shows that the claims were unreasonable, Durrant told Dow Jones Newswires.

A number of related patent cases are still ongoing, said Durrant, adding that Monday’s win is “very important” for Nokia.

Durrant said Nokia now aims to get the majority of its related legal costs recovered, but declined to comment on how much money would be involved.

IPCom wasn’t immediately available to comment.

October 27, 2009 by moto · Leave a Comment

Nokia announced its first smartphone for China Mobile’s 3G network on Tuesday.

The Nokia 6788 runs the Symbian operating system and has a 2.8-inch display, a 5-megapixel camera with a dual-LED flash, and support for A-GPS (Assisted GPS).

Content can be stored in the phone’s 4GB memory or on a microSD card up to 8GB in capacity. The phone also supports instant messaging and e-mail, according to a spec sheet from Nokia.

Nokia expects to begin selling the 6788 at the end of December, but has not announced a price.

China Mobile’s 3G network uses TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access), a radio technology developed in China. Nokia said it plans to introduce more TD-SCDMA phones in the near future.

Dell confirms Android phone

October 9, 2009 by moto · Leave a Comment

Chalk up another win for Google in the 21st Century mobile phone war: Dell has announced its first foray into the cellphone market - and it will be with a mobile that runs on the search giant’s Android operating system.

Dell’s Android phone, featuring both a touchscreen and a keyboard, is expected next year on US carrier AT&T, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Dell is also talking to multiple other carriers.

In the PC market, Dell has always been closely tied to Google rival Microsoft.

HTC already has a Google Android based phone in the market (sold here by Vodafone; read review here), while LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Motorola have Android-based models in the works.

While it still has a larger user-base, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile has yet to catch fire with customers or phone makers. This week’s local launch of Window Mobile 6.5 was backed by a single handset maker (LG), although an HTC model running 6.5 is promised in the New Year.

Both Google’s Android and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile are squaring off against Apple’s proprietary iPhone OS, and Nokia’s open-source, more old-school Symbian OS.

Dell and HP are also trialling a netbook version of Android - a precursor to Google’s full-blown Windows competitor, ChromeOS, due in 2010.

O2 Palm Pre launches in Germany on October 13, UK and Ireland on October 16, No Word from Spain yet

August 2, 2009 by moto · Leave a Comment

Finally there is a date for the GSM Palm Pre release, last time, we had an Autum release that now has an specific date. Surprisingly, O2 finally confirms today that the Palm Pre will be available in the UK on October 16th exclusively on the O2 network. Those who want to purchase the new device, can do so directly from O2, the Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U and other O2’s Business partners. It will also be available for purchase online from the O2 shop at www.o2.co.uk/shop.

First O2 will launch the GSM Palm Pre in Germany on October 13th, then, on October 16th the Pre smartphone will make its way to the United Kingdom and Ireland. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on the launch for the first webOS phone in Spain. The tariffs will vary by country – of course – but the great news for many Europeans is that some of them will be able to get the Pre for free, frei, gratis (or zero, null, nada).

Lets begin with the UK, where Business users will be able to pick up the Pre for free, on 24 or 36 month contracts at £30.91 ($51) or above. And there will be five different tariffs – as you can see on the first image below – four of which are 18 month contracts and a fifth lasting 24 months. Ranging from £29.38 ($48) to £73.41 ($120), all include unlimited UK HSDPA data and WiFi access in The Cloud and BT hotspots, together with varying amounts of included calls and messages.

O2 Ireland will have also five plans, all of them are for 18 months, ranging from €40 ($59) to €100 ($148) per month. The price of the Palm Pre in these plans will go from free (that comes to $0.00) to just €99 ($146). The plan for the free Palm Pre will include 700 minutes, 250 texts, 25 MMS, and 1 GB of data. All plans are limited to 1 GB of data per month, though they do also all come with unlimited access to O2’s WiFi hotspot network.

In Germany the Pre will be available on any contract with O2 Germany, though they recommend you sign up for at least the €10 ($15) per month data plan, if not, you’ll have to face by-the-kb data charges, which, with the Pre, you know it will happen to some people. German customers can also make a down payment of €1 ($2) for the Pre, and pay the remaining sum in 24 monthly rates of €20 ($30). All this with the new concept O2 My Handy at zero percent interest rate. Germans can also get the Pre contract-free, and yes, it will also be unlocked.

The Palm Pre will be Quad-Band on GSM and Tri-Band 3G, so it will support both; European and US 3G on AT&T.

* Palm Pre GSM Bands: 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
* Palm Pre UMTS/HSDPA Bands: 850 / 1900 / 2100

Well, hackers and importers, start your engines. Although the German version will have the QWERTZ-style keyboard, I know many people – including me – that will not care to deal with the ‘Y’ in place of the ‘Z’ and vice versa. In that case, the only problem will be the carrier (AT&T).

Verizon Talks Behind AT&T’s Back

July 28, 2009 by moto · Leave a Comment

It’s pretty obvious that AT&T doesn’t care about its customers and that it can’t scale to meet the growing demands of its iPhone customers. AT&T’s U.S. network is completely saturated and over-sold.

Complaints about widespread AT&T outages at large events like Macworld Expo, WWDC, SXSW and concerts seem to have fallen on deaf ears. ComicCon is the latest example of how AT&T is truly a steaming heap of failure — and competitors are starting to call them on it.
